Winter Idea Harvest

January 1st, 2009 by kate

Before we wrap up 2008, we thought to pause and express our sincere thanks for your patronage this past year. It’s been an arduous year–full of trepidation, and yes, hope.

As we anticipate 2009, we thought this an ideal time to solicit our community for feedback and suggestions for the year ahead.

  • Do you miss yoga at the farm?
  • Politically-minded? How about a night of wine and banter?
  • Interested in organizing a group meet-up at the farm?
  • Poetry reading? Plays? Book-swaps?
  • Would you like us to showcase more local artisans?
  • Interested in prepared foods? Local? Vegan? Gluten-Free?
  • Maybe you would like to see more workshops, seminars, or classes throughout the year. If so, what did you have in mind?

Christmas Trees are Here

December 12th, 2008 by kate

We’re offering both blue spruce and frasier furs this season. Both are locally grown and freshly cut, with new stock arriving daily. To accommodate the diverse needs of our customers, we are offering trees in a wide range of sizes. Your choice: $60

The blue spruce has a distinctive silvery-blue color and classical pyramid shape. It’s branches are stiffer than the frasier fur, and the needles are sharper.

Frasier furs typically have a softer, more feathery look. The needles are a deep, verdant green with a silvery underbelly. The branches are lighter and softer than the spruce.

Both trees share the desire for copious amounts of water and the same stunning aromatic qualities.

If you are looking for an alternative to bringing a tree into your home, remember, we offer a wide selection of cut greens, wreaths, ornamental boxes, and freshly cut winterberry and rose hips to decorate your home.

If you’re more of a Charlie Brown Christmas tree type, we have many small live trees that would work well as an outdoor decoration. They will hold a few ornaments, and can be planted when the ground thaws.

Preorder Holiday Baked Goods

November 20th, 2008 by kate

It’s feeling wintry, isn’t it? It’s the time of year when we gather friends and family to celebrate. The heart of our family’s celebration is, of course, the food.

In years past, we have spent countless hours chopping and kneading ourselves into a frenzy. Sometimes it’s a calming and therapeutic process, and sometimes, well, it’s not. To simplify holiday entertaining, we are excited to offer the following selection of pies and breads from our friends at Balthazar bakery

  • Sweet Potato Pecan Pie
  • Gala Apple Pie
  • Classic Pumpkin Pie
  • Autumn Galette
  • Cranberry-Pecan Bread
  • Walnut Ring Bread
  • The artisan’s at Balthazar bake fresh daily, using traditional methods and the finest ingredients available.

To order the baked goods of your choice, please stop by the farm stand or email us for more information.

    Seasonal Wreath-Making Workshops

    November 2nd, 2008 by kate

Each Saturday through Christmas, we offer wreath-making workshops at our Blooming Grove farm stand.

Our own Guy Jones will walk you through each step of the process–from choosing your greens to constructing the finished piece. If wreaths aren’t your thing, we’ll also help you create centerpieces, swags, or other festive decor. All materials will be supplied, as will refreshments. Classes begin at 1:00.

For years, we have enjoyed the privilege of what is known as a “Foraging License.” This allows us to enter restricted state owned properties to gather fresh rosehips, winter berries, red dogwood branches, witch hazel, teasel, fern centers, moss sumac and various greenery such as white pine, juniper and cedar.

Come alone for a relaxing afternoon, or bring some friends and a bottle of wine.

Saturdays through Christmas. Registration fee: $25, includes everything. Reservation recommended, especially for groups of 5 or more. Participants in the workshop also enjoy 15% off the purchase of additional decorative greens: bunches of holly, juniper, willow branches, winterberry bunches, etc.

Pictures will be posted as they become available. Our wreaths have been featured in Martha Stewart, New York Magazine, and on some of the loveliest mantles in the Hudson Valley.
